Redact PDF — permanently remove sensitive text, locally
Redact PDF documents — no uploads, no servers. Draw shapes over text, images, and logos to black them out, censor, or mask them. The covered content is truly destroyed, not just hidden. Free and completely private.
When to use
Use the Redact PDF tool whenever you need to remove sensitive information before sharing a document — names, addresses, account numbers, IDs, photos, or logos. It replaces the risky "black box in a normal PDF editor" approach with genuine destruction of the underlying content.

Real redaction, not just a black box on top
Most "redaction" tools just draw a black rectangle over the text. The problem? The words are still there in the file. Anyone can select, copy, or strip the cover off and read what you meant to hide. PDF Safe does it properly. When you redact a page, that page is converted into a sealed image. The original text and vector data underneath is destroyed during the process. The covered words can no longer be selected, searched, copied, or recovered. What you blacked out is gone for good.
Cover vs redact — why the difference matters
Covering places a colored shape on top of the content. The original text stream stays intact underneath. It looks hidden on screen, but the data is still in the file. Forensics tools, copy-paste, and "select all" can bring it back. Redacting removes the content itself. There is nothing underneath to recover. This is the only kind of redaction worth trusting with sensitive information. PDF Safe performs real redaction so you can share the file without wondering what is lurking beneath the surface.
How to redact a PDF on your device
1. Open the Redact PDF tool and drop your document onto the page. 2. Pick a shape: rectangle for blocks of text, ellipse for stamps or faces, freehand for irregular areas, or mosaic to pixelate instead of black out. 3. Draw over everything you want to remove. Add as many shapes as you need, on any page. 4. Use the eyedropper to match a color from the page, or pick black/white for a classic redaction look. 5. Click Redact & Download. The marked pages are sealed and the content underneath is destroyed. 6. Save the redacted PDF to your device. No account. No file size limit. Nothing is sent to any server.
Four ways to mark what goes
Rectangle: the workhorse. Drag a box over a name, an address, a paragraph, or an account number. Fast and precise for any block of text. Ellipse: perfect for round stamps, profile photos, or logos. Circle what you want gone and it is gone. Freehand: trace an irregular shape when the sensitive area is not a clean rectangle. Useful for handwriting, signatures, or partially overlapping content. Mosaic: pixelate a region instead of blacking it out. Useful when you need to show that something is there (a face, a license plate) without revealing the detail.
Your documents never leave your device
Redaction is a privacy-sensitive task by definition. You are removing information precisely because it should not be seen. Sending that same file to a third-party server to do the redaction defeats the purpose entirely. Browser-based redaction works differently: 1. Your PDF loads directly into browser memory. 2. You draw the redaction shapes. 3. The marked pages are rasterized and sealed locally. 4. The redacted PDF is written straight to your device. Nothing is transmitted. The file never leaves your machine. There is no server-side copy, no temporary storage, no log of what you removed.
When redaction changes a page
A page you redact is converted into a high-resolution image so the underlying text can be destroyed. The page still looks the same — minus the redacted areas — but it is no longer selectable or searchable. Pages you do not touch stay exactly as they were, with full text selectability and search. This means a 20-page document with redactions on 2 pages keeps 18 pages of fully searchable text and 2 sealed image pages. The tradeoff is intentional: it is the only way to guarantee the redacted content is truly gone.
